Free Listings Optimization: More Traffic Without Spending on Ads

Google's free product listings appear across the Shopping tab, Google Search, and Google Images.

The zero-cost traffic source most merchants under-optimize

In 2020, Google opened Merchant Center product listings to all merchants at no cost. Today, any merchant with an approved Merchant Center account and a qualifying product feed can appear in Google’s free product listings with no cost per click.

Free listings appear in different places and operate under different rules than paid Shopping ads. Most merchants who run paid Shopping treat free listings as a bonus that handles itself. That’s a missed opportunity — free listings have distinct optimization levers.

Where free listings appear

Google Shopping tab

The dedicated Shopping tab at shopping.google.com. Free listings appear below paid results. Unlike paid Shopping, free listings can appear for a broader set of queries — Google doesn’t restrict free listing serving by budget, so it can be more liberal with eligibility.

Google Search (main results page)

Free listings can appear in the standard search results page in a “Popular products” or “More products” section, typically below paid Shopping ads but still on page one. These placements are algorithmically selected for informational or transactional product queries.

Google Images

Product images with Shopping annotations can appear in Google Images results when Google’s system identifies your image as matching a product search.

Other surfaces

Free listings also feed into Google Lens, Maps, and YouTube Shopping panels — covered in the non-Shopping surfaces guide.

Eligibility requirements

  • Account in good standing — no active suspensions, policies configured

  • Free listings program enabled — Growth → Manage programs → Free listings → Enable. New accounts must opt in explicitly; many miss this step.

  • Products approved in Merchant Center — disapproved products don’t appear in free listings

  • Landing page requirements — same as paid Shopping: product page accessible, price matches feed, checkout works

  • Website verification completed

How free listing ranking differs from paid Shopping

Paid Shopping uses bids, Quality Score, and competitive auction dynamics. Free listings have no bids — Google determines ranking based on relevance and quality signals alone.

  • Product data quality matters more. Without bids to compensate for weak data, the relevance signal from your feed attributes is the primary ranking input. A product with an excellent title, GTIN, accurate description, and good images will consistently outrank a product with weak data.

  • Price competitiveness is weighted. Google has confirmed that product price factors into free listing ranking. Competitive pricing improves your position relative to higher-priced alternatives for the same queries.

  • Reviews and ratings help. Aggregate review scores from Google’s Shopping Graph (populated via GTINs) improve free listing CTR and may influence ranking for competitive queries.

  • You cannot buy your way to the top. Paid spend provides no advantage in free listings. Data quality and price competitiveness are the only levers.

Optimizations specific to free listings

GTIN coverage

GTINs unlock Shopping Graph enrichment: aggregate star ratings, competitive price comparisons, specification overlays. A product with a GTIN that has 200 reviews across multiple retailers will show a star rating that a product without a GTIN cannot access. For GTIN impact details, see the GTIN attribute guide.

Image quality

CTR in free listings is strongly driven by image quality. Minimums for non-apparel: 100×100px; for apparel: 250×250px. But these are floor requirements — a competitive free listing needs 800×800px or larger images on a clean background. Your image must stand out at thumbnail size in a visually dense results page.

product_highlight — free real estate most merchants ignore

Product highlights are bullet-point feature descriptions shown specifically in free listings across the Shopping tab and other surfaces. About 95% of merchants leave the product_highlight attribute empty. Filling in 4-6 highlights per product gives your entries more substance and informational value than competitors’ bare entries.

Rules: 1-150 characters per bullet, 2-100 bullets per product (4-6 recommended). Use sentence fragments, not promotional copy. Good examples: “Waterproof to 50m depth”, “Compatible with iOS and Android”, “Available in 8 colors”. Avoid pricing, shipping info, or promotional language.

Price accuracy and update frequency

Price mismatches are the top cause of free listing disapprovals. For paid Shopping, a price mismatch causes a product disapproval that reduces paid spend. For free listings, the same mismatch removes the product from free traffic — silently, with no budget signal to alert you.

A supplemental feed updating price/availability every 15-20 minutes ensures free listing inventory reflects real prices, preventing disapprovals that kill free traffic. See the feed optimization guide for supplemental feed setup.

Tracking free listing performance

Free listing performance is visible in Merchant Center under Performance → Dashboard. Metrics: free listing clicks, impressions, CTR. This data is only in Merchant Center, not Google Ads — free listings don’t appear in campaign reporting.

Key benchmark to watch: if free listing CTR is significantly below your paid Shopping CTR for the same products, it suggests an image quality or title issue. If free listing impressions are low relative to paid impressions for the same queries, data quality improvements can help.

Common free listing mistakes

  • Not enabling the free listings program. Check: Growth → Manage programs → Free listings.

  • Treating free listings as “handled” once enabled. They have distinct optimization levers — set-and-forget leaves traffic on the table.

  • Ignoring free listing disapprovals. These don’t show up in paid Shopping campaign data — they silently disappear from free traffic. Monitor the Free Listings section in Diagnostics separately.

  • Missing product_highlight. This attribute appears specifically in free listing contexts. ~95% of competitors leave it empty.
