How to Fix "Missing Required Apparel Attributes" in Google Merchant Center
Products disapproved for missing color, size, gender, or age_group? Learn exactly which markets require which apparel attributes, how item groups work, and…
What are the missing apparel attribute errors?
Google requires four specific attributes for products classified as Apparel & Accessories: color, size, gender, and age_group. When any of these is absent from a product that falls into an apparel category, Google disapproves the product with a “missing required attribute” error.
These are some of the most common disapprovals in Shopping feeds — and the most avoidable. Unlike price mismatches (which require real-time coordination between feed and website), apparel attributes are static data that can be fixed once and rarely need to change.
Which markets require which attributes
The requirements are not global. Google enforces mandatory apparel attributes in specific countries:
-
Required for color, size, gender, age_group: Brazil (BR), France (FR), Germany (DE), Japan (JP), United Kingdom (UK), United States (US)
-
Required for products that vary by that attribute (all markets): If products in an item group differ by color or size, both
colorandsizeare required in every market. -
All other markets: These attributes are strongly recommended (and improve performance via Shopping filters) but are not technically required for approval.
If your primary feed targets multiple countries, apply the strictest rules across the board.
Attribute requirements in detail
Color [color]
Up to 3 color values separated by ”/” (e.g., Black/White/Red). Maximum 100 characters total, 40 per color. Use recognizable color names — not marketing names like “Midnight Ocean.”
Size [size]
Submit one size per product variant — not a range. Pair with size_system (US, UK, EU, etc.) for international apparel feeds.
Gender [gender]
Allowed values: male, female, unisex. “men,” “women,” “boy,” or “girl” are invalid.
Age Group [age_group]
Allowed values: newborn (0–3 months), infant (3–12 months), toddler (1–5 years), kids (5–13 years), adult (13+ years). Affects which size chart Google uses to interpret the size value.
Step-by-step fix workflow
-
Go to Merchant Center → Products → Diagnostics and filter by “Missing required attribute.”
-
Identify whether affected products are parent-level or variant-level. Apparel feeds should use one row per variant.
-
Map the four required attributes to your data source (CMS, ERP, product database).
-
Add the missing attributes to your feed source.
-
Verify format: color uses ”/” not commas, size is one value per variant, gender uses exact values, age_group uses one of five valid values.
-
Re-fetch your feed in Merchant Center.
-
Check Diagnostics after 24 hours.
