Gender is a critical qualifying attribute. Without it, your women's shoes may show to men and vice versa — burning budget on zero-conversion clicks. Correct gender data also activates the Shopping gender filter, which a significant proportion of apparel shoppers use as their first filter.
What is the gender attribute?
The gender attribute specifies the gender a product is designed for. Google Merchant Center uses this attribute for two distinct purposes: search query matching (ensuring gendered searches trigger only appropriately gendered products) and Shopping filter activation (powering the gender filter used by shoppers to narrow their Shopping results).
Gender is a qualifying attribute — its primary role is to exclude your product from irrelevant searches, not just to include it in relevant ones. A women’s dress showing up in search results for “men’s formal wear” costs you a click, produces no conversion, and signals poor ad relevance to Google’s system. Accurate gender data prevents this waste and ensures your budget is spent on genuinely relevant impressions.

Where it displays

Shopping Ads — Google’s ad serving system uses gender to match products against gendered search queries (“men’s hiking boots”, “women’s running shoes”, “ladies’ dresses”). Products with accurate gender data are excluded from opposite-gender queries, saving budget and improving ad relevance scores. Free Listings — Free Listings in the Shopping tab and Google Search product carousels include a gender filter. Dynamic Remarketing & Display Ads — Google’s audience engine uses gender data when building Dynamic Remarketing creatives. When a male shopper has browsed your men’s collection, the remarketing system shows him men’s products from his browsing history — not women’s alternatives. This precision is only possible when gender is declared at the product level. Gender also interacts with Google’s demographic audience targeting in Display campaigns, making gender-declared products more targetable to the right demographic segments.

Use with age_group for children’s products — For products targeting minors, always pair gender with
age_group. Gender alone is insufficient to classify children’s apparel correctly.

Mapping your internal gender classifications
Most product databases use different gender terminology than Google’s three accepted values. A clean mapping is essential:

Include gender in the product title
Adding “Women’s” or “Men’s” to the product title reinforces Google’s gender classification signal and directly improves query matching for gendered searches. This is especially important for products where the title alone doesn’t make the gender obvious (e.g., “Classic Oxford Shirt” vs. “Men’s Classic Oxford Shirt”).
Do not default to unisex
Unisex is commonly overused as a catch-all. If a product has a gendered sizing chart or is explicitly marketed to one gender, use the gendered value. Overusing unisex weakens your targeting precision and may cause your products to appear in the wrong gender filter results.

Waste reduction — Without gender data, a women’s product may serve to men searching for men’s products — zero-conversion clicks that burn budget. Correct gender data can reduce irrelevant impressions significantly, improving ROAS.
