Your title determines where your product shows up

The product title is the single most influential attribute in your Google Shopping feed. It directly affects which search queries trigger your product, how your ad ranks in the auction, and whether shoppers click. Yet most merchants treat titles as an afterthought — copying them straight from their CMS without any optimization.

The anatomy of a high-performing title

After analyzing millions of Shopping impressions, a clear pattern emerges for titles that drive clicks:

Formula: [Brand] + [Product Type] + [Key Attribute 1] + [Key Attribute 2] + [Model/Variant]

Examples:

  • Bad: “Running Shoes”

  • Good: “Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 41 — Men’s Running Shoes — Black/White”

  • Bad: “Laptop Stand”

  • Good: “Rain Design mStand 360 Aluminum Laptop Stand — Silver — MacBook Compatible”

The 70-character rule

Google Shopping truncates titles at different lengths depending on the device and ad format. On mobile, only ~50-70 characters are visible. On desktop, you get up to ~70-100. The lesson: front-load your most important keywords in the first 70 characters.

Don’t bury the brand name or product type at the end. Shoppers scan titles quickly — the first few words determine whether they click.

Which attributes to include (by category)

The optimal title structure varies by product category:

  • Apparel: Brand + Gender + Product Type + Color + Size + Material

  • Electronics: Brand + Model + Product Type + Key Spec (RAM, storage) + Color

  • Home & Garden: Brand + Product Type + Material + Dimensions + Style

  • Beauty: Brand + Product Line + Product Type + Size/Volume + Variant

Keyword research for product titles

Don’t guess which keywords to include — research them. Use these data sources:

  • Google Ads Search Terms Report — what people actually search before clicking your Shopping ads

  • Google Search Console — organic queries that lead to your product pages

  • Merchant Center Search Terms Report — available under Performance tab

  • Competitor analysis — check what top competitors include in their titles

Common title optimization mistakes

  • Keyword stuffing — “Running Shoes Men Running Shoes Best Running Shoes Cheap” gets flagged

  • ALL CAPS — Violates Google’s editorial policies. Use normal capitalization.

  • Promotional text in titles — “50% OFF” or “Free Shipping” belongs in promotions, not titles

  • Missing brand — Brand is one of the most-searched attributes. Always include it first.

  • Identical titles for variants — Color and size should be in the title for each variant

A/B testing product titles

The best way to improve is to test. Use a supplemental feed to modify titles for a subset of products and compare performance against the originals. Key metrics to track: impressions, CTR, and conversion rate.

Run tests for at least 2 weeks to get statistically meaningful results. Focus on your top-performing products first — small title improvements on high-volume products have the biggest absolute impact.
